Newborn Photography Session:

What to Expect During the Shoot

Congratulations on the safe arrival of your bub!

I truly understand that you might be feeling overwhelmed and slowly recovering from birth — but we also don’t want to miss this special window to capture your baby’s first weeks. These are fleeting moments, and I’m here to make this experience as easy and memorable as possible for you.

Here’s a little guide to help you prepare for your newborn session and know what to expect on the day.

How Long Will the Session Take?

Newborn sessions generally take a bit longer because they’re all about working around your baby’s natural rhythm. I usually break the session into two parts:

👉 Part 1: Family Session

If you have family members participating (including siblings), we start with this. My goal is to do these photos as efficiently as possible, so younger siblings don’t lose interest.

👉 Part 2: Baby Solo Portraits

This is where the waiting game can begin! Depending on your baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule, I’ll capture those precious shots when your little one is full, content, and sleepy (I like to call it “milk drunk!”). If you feel your baby is already in the perfect sleepy mood when we start, we can flip the order — starting with baby solo portraits first, and doing family photos afterward.

💡 Note on older newborns (or wide-awake bubs): When photographing slightly older babies or babies who are more alert, I focus more on family and connection shots. I will still capture a few solo portraits with your baby wrapped snugly and comfortably.

What Should You Wear?

For your session, I recommend keeping it simple and timeless:

✅ Whites, neutrals, and earth tones — these colours photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family’s connection and your baby. They also blend perfectly with my natural, minimalist style.

✅ Mums, I’ve got you covered! — I have a small client wardrobe available if you’d like to borrow something lovely and comfortable to wear during your session.

✅ For your baby — I provide a variety of wraps and outfits in soft whites and neutral shades that I’ve carefully chosen for my setups.

What Should You Bring?

If you’re visiting my little home studio (you can read more about it in this blog), here’s what I suggest you bring to help the session go smoothly:

✅ Milk or formula — enough to keep your baby settled throughout the session

✅ Comfort items — dummy, favourite blanket, or anything your baby loves

✅ Nappies and wipes — expect a few changes along the way!

✅ Snacks & water for yourselves — you’ll get thirsty and peckish, especially with the feeding and cuddling

✅ Entertainment for siblings or your partner — in case things take a little longer

The Goal

My aim is simple: to beautifully capture your family and your precious baby. My dream scenario is your bub soundly sleeping so I can gently move them into different cozy poses and setups. I’ll work patiently to create images that will make you proud — ones you’ll want to display and treasure forever
